Blake Snell (32), one of the biggest starting pitchers in the Major League Baseball (MLB) free agent market, will head to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The race to recruit the most promising Japanese pitcher is in mystery.
The LA Times, a U.S. media outlet, said on the 27th (Korea time), “According to sources, Snell reportedly signed a five-year contract with the Dodgers for a total of $182 million (254.363 billion won).” The media reported, “The Dodgers, which spent more than $100 million on recruiting Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto last year, opened their wallets to add blockbuster players to the starting rotation again.”
Snell is one of the top left-handers in the MLB. When he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays, he became the winner of the American League Cy Young Award with 21 wins and 5 losses and a 1.89 ERA in 2018, and also won the National League Cy Young Award with 14 wins and 9 losses and a 2.25 ERA in the 2023 season when he played for the San Diego Padres.
Snell became a free agent after the 2023 season, but failed to sign a long-term contract and signed a two-year contract ($62 million) with the San Francisco Giants. An opt-out clause was included after the 2024 season, and he came back to the market about a year later. Snell joined the team about a week later due to an injury this season. 꽁머니 could not play more than five innings in all three of the first games, and had a break for more than a month due to recurrence of injuries. However, he pitched like a pitcher who won two Cy Young Awards after his return. He went 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 games he played in the 2024 season. After securing competitiveness, he checked his value in the free agent market again and was selected as the winner of the 2024 MLB World Series.
As Snell headed to the Dodgers, Japanese pitcher Rocky Sasaki’s move to advance to MLB through posting also went into the fog. Rumors of Sasaki’s trip to the Dodgers were so rampant that there were suspicions of tempering. The fact that Japanese players Ohtani and Yamamoto are playing on the team made the connection stronger.
Sasaki’s agent denied the “contract theory.” In this situation, Snell, a “blockbuster-class” pitcher, headed to the Dodgers. The Dodgers’ starting lineup, where Ohtani returns as a pitcher in the 2025 season, is by no means weak. Walker Buehler has qualified as an FA, but he still has a lot of resources. It is questionable whether the Dodgers, which even Snell joined, will send Sasaki a love call.
